Soekarno, the first President of Indonesia, ever said “Jas Merah”, it stands for “Jangan Sekali-kali Meninggalkan Sejarah” or “do not ever forget the history.” It is a strong statement and often quoted in many texts. Then, I write one of my hometown history, Lanfang Republic.
Lanfang Republic was a Chinese state in West Kalimantan in Indonesia that was established by a Hakka Chinese named Luo Fangbo (羅芳伯) in 1777, until it was ended by Dutch occupation in 1884. (Read more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanfang_Republic).
Lanfang Republic was built by Low Fang Pak (Lou Fang Bo) to organize thousands Chinese immigrants who came to West Kalimantan for mining gold and looking for a new life. Chinese people firstly came to West Kalimantan in 1740 for approving Opu Daeng Manmbon’s invitation, then followed by Sambas Sultanate in 1750. The Chinese immigrants coming’s big wave was happened in 1764, when they found out the gold potency in Montrado, Seminis, Lumar and the other area.
As a country, Lanfang had its own flag and Law. Lanfang organized system of taxation, developed a system of education, agriculture mining, and even had a self-sustained economic resilience, complete with banking.
